What the work actually involves
Isolating the existing supply, checking the condition and size of the gas pipework feeding the appliance, fitting a suitable isolation valve and, where needed, a bayonet fitting and flexible hose to the correct standard. The appliance is levelled and secured, connected, and then tested — a tightness test on the pipework, a check of the burner flame picture, and on fires a flue flow and spillage test to prove combustion products are leaving the property.

Appliance types, connection standards and the tests that matter
Cookers, hobs and fires are grouped together because they are all gas appliances, but each has its own installation standards, clearances and failure modes.
Cookers, ranges, hobs and ovens
Freestanding cookers and range cookers are normally connected with a bayonet fitting and an approved flexible hose, sized and routed so the appliance can be pulled forward for cleaning without straining or kinking the hose, and fitted with a stability bracket or chain where the manufacturer requires one. Range cookers frequently have a higher gas rate than the appliance they replace, which means the existing supply pipe has to be checked for capacity rather than assumed adequate.
Built-in hobs and ovens are connected rigidly and need careful attention to clearances from combustible surfaces, adjacent tall units and extraction, along with an accessible isolation point that does not disappear behind a fixed panel once the kitchen is finished. Where a property is on LPG rather than natural gas, the appliance must be converted with the manufacturer's kit and the injectors changed, not simply connected and hoped for.

Gas fires, living-flame and decorative appliances
Gas fires carry more installation risk than any other domestic gas appliance because they rely on a flue or chimney to remove combustion products from the room people sit in. Before an installation we check the flue type and condition, arrange sweeping or lining where the flue requires it, confirm the hearth and surround meet the appliance's requirements, and verify that room ventilation is adequate for the appliance's rating.
After the appliance is fitted we carry out a flue flow test to confirm the flue draws, then a spillage test with the room in normal use — doors and windows as the household would have them and extraction running — to prove combustion products go up the flue and not into the room. Any fire that fails a spillage test is left isolated and the reason explained, because the alternative is an appliance quietly putting carbon monoxide into a living space.
Tightness testing, ventilation and gas rate
A tightness test measures whether the whole installation holds pressure with the gas off at the meter, and it is the check that distinguishes a certified job from a connection. Alongside it, we verify the working gas pressure at the appliance and calculate the gas rate against the data plate, which catches undersized pipework and partially blocked burners that a visual inspection misses.
Ventilation is the quiet failure point in modern homes. Sealed windows, extraction and boxed-in air bricks all reduce the air available for combustion. Every appliance has a ventilation requirement based on its heat input and whether it is room-sealed, and we check that requirement against what the room actually provides rather than what it was designed to provide twenty years ago.
Landlords, safety checks and carbon monoxide alarms
Landlords must have every gas appliance and flue in a let property checked annually by a registered engineer and recorded on a gas safety record. That includes cookers, hobs and fires, not just the boiler. Where we install an appliance in a let property, the appliance is added to the record and the tenant given the relevant documentation.
Regulations now require a carbon monoxide alarm in any room with a fixed combustion appliance other than a gas cooker, and we recommend one in kitchens too. An alarm is not a substitute for correct installation — it is the last line of defence when something changes later, such as a blocked flue, a bird's nest in a chimney or a covered vent after building work.

Can I connect a gas cooker myself?
No. Working on a gas appliance or its pipework without being on the Gas Safe Register is against the law, and it invalidates household insurance and the appliance warranty. A cooker connection is a short visit for a registered engineer and includes a tightness test that DIY connection cannot provide.
How much does it cost to fit a gas cooker or hob in Essex?
It depends on whether a suitable bayonet fitting and isolation valve are already in place, whether pipework needs altering for the appliance's gas rate, and the access at the position. We confirm a written fixed price before starting, and prices can vary by location.
Will you take away my old cooker or fire?
We disconnect and safely cap the supply for the old appliance as part of the job and can move it clear of the installation area. Disposal of the old appliance can usually be arranged — mention it when you book so it is included in the price.
My gas fire smells or stains the surround. Is that dangerous?
Treat it as urgent. Sooting, staining above the fire, a persistent smell or a flame that lifts and flickers all suggest combustion products are not clearing properly. Stop using the appliance, ventilate the room and call us — the phone is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Do I need a gas safety certificate for a cooker in a rented property?
Yes. A landlord gas safety record must cover every gas appliance and flue in the property, which includes cookers, hobs and fires as well as the boiler. We can carry out appliance work and the CP12 in the same visit.
Can you convert an appliance from natural gas to LPG?
Where the manufacturer supplies a conversion kit for that model, yes. The injectors are changed, the appliance is reset for the new gas and then pressure-tested and rated. Appliances without an approved conversion kit cannot be safely converted and we will tell you plainly if that is the case.
How long does a hob or cooker installation take?
A straightforward cooker connection onto an existing bayonet is typically under an hour including testing. A built-in hob replacement, pipework alteration or a fire installation with flue testing takes considerably longer, and we give you a realistic time at the survey.
